Healthy Eating
Today’s marketplace has made food more accessible than it has ever been before. Unfortunately, all of our choices are not healthy ones. In fact, in today’s fast paced society, eating-on-the-go has become the norm, which has unfortunately made fast food restaurants and pre-prepared foods the easier option, and for some, the “only” option. If you also take into consideration that there is a general lack of education regarding healthy eating habits, is there any surprise that the rates of obesity and cardiovascular disease in Canada at are an all-time high?
To help counter this trend within the Canadian Forces, the Health Promotion staff offer courses on Healthy Eating based off the Canadian Food Guide, which includes eating from all four food groups – Vegetables and Fruit, Grain Products, Milk and Alternatives, and Meat and Alternatives. By eating well according to the Canadian Food Guide, Canadians will be able to learn what amount of food and what type of food they need in order to meet their mineral and vitamin needs, and to reduce their risk of obesity and various chronic diseases.
In addition, the Healthy Eating program will teach you that there are various aspects in your environment that make eating healthier, informed choices the “only” option. You will then realize that there are always healthy options if you must eat-on-the-go.
