Managing Angry Moments (MAM)
The Canadian Forces Managing Angry Moments (MAM) Workshop is designed to increase personal performance by assisting participants to deal with anger generating situations in an emotionally non-reactive way. Participants are supported to identify successful coping strategies to anger generating situations that they already employ. Participants will also learn and practice new tools and skills.
The program’s theoretical framework is based on cognitive behavioural theory. This theory emphasizes that one’s thoughts are the basis of one’s actions. As a result, MAM focuses on isolating specific anger generating situations, examining the thinking patterns associated with them, and assisting participants to identify alternative problem solving behaviours.
Participants will attend nine sessions over 5 days. Topics covered include:
- Orientation and Information
- Understanding Anger
- Self-Assessment: What is my Relationship to Anger?
- Beliefs and Triggers
- Self-Management
- Managing Conflict with Others
- Review and Integration
- Spirituality and Forgiveness
- Relapse, Prevention and Closure
At the end of this program, participants will have developed Anger Generating Situation Worksheets that identify in detail the specific situations (i.e. personal, family and military) that lead to reactive behaviour. In addition, participants will have developed and practiced Action Plans that identify coping strategies to apply in anger generating situations.
