Listen to any sailor and you will understand that a lifetime of enjoyment comes with being part of the sailing community.

Sailing is for everyone. Whether you are looking for recreation, competition, fitness, or just plain fun and relaxation, a membership at Shearwater Yacht Club (SYC) will allow you to find it while exploring the best sailing waters in the area. McNab's Island, Lawlor's Island, and the outer reaches of Halifax Harbour are all within easy reach.

Shearwater's sailors range in age from toddlers to "old salts" in their 80s, all keen to enjoy the thrill and magic of sails and the sea.

SYC offers a range of sailing courses during the months of June, July, and August. There are programs for the young and the old, basic and advanced. All courses emphasize on-the-water training and are taught by Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) certified instructors.

Youth Courses
ages 6 to 14
Youth courses are taught weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ask about early drop-off and late pick-up! This program provides for a simple introduction to sailing, as well as CYA recognized Basic and Advanced Learn-to-Sail courses. Are you new to sailing and want to find out if it is for you? Try the one-week introduction to sailing. Want to learn more? Sign up for two weeks or longer.

Adult Courses
Adult courses are taught on evenings and weekends. This program offers the Basic and Advanced Learn to Sail package, as well as a Basic Cruising course. The latter will qualify you as a skipper on our 26 foot keelboat, which then allows you to rent it for sailing and cruising in the local area.

Crewing Membership
You do not need to own a boat to become a member of Shearwater Yacht Club. You can enjoy all the amenities the club has to offer, including sailing, cruising, and social functions, by crewing on someone else's boat. This is a great way to make new friends, and to find out if the life of a sailor is for you, or your family.

Boat Rentals
You like to sail, but don't want the expense of owning and maintaining a boat of your own? We have sailing dinghies and a keelboat for rent to our members at very reasonable rates. All you need is the appropriate qualification awarded through one of our courses.
