The PSP Community Recreation Department is dedicated to providing our military community with fun and educational aquatic programming. Our staff are fully qualified Red Cross Instructors as well as Life Saving Society Lifeguard/Instructors and all of our staff participate in regular in-service training. We offer the Canadian Red Cross Swim Program including Parent and Tot programs, Swim Kids level 1-10, as well as adult lessons. We also offer the Life Saving Society leadership training programs.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are available for those participants who would like individualized attention. Lessons are purchased in a 8 session block, and each session is 30 minutes long. Applications are available at Shearwater location. For further information please contact the Aquatics Supervisor at 720-3047.

Red Cross Swim Program

The Red Cross Swim Program offers lessons to swimmers of every age a level from preschool to adult and varies in how it evaluates the participants progress. In the Preschool program, participants in the lower levels will progress through the levels based on participation and age. Participants in the upper levels will progress based on their skills. The Swim Kids program uses continuous evaluation to determine progress through the levels. The Adult program is based on personal interest and goals set with the instructor.

Sea Otter Orientation to water and facility.
Salamander Safety rules, assisted entries, chest deep-water activities, floats & glides rhythmic breathing, 2m swim
Sunfish Safety rules, unassisted entries, chest deep-water activities, floats & glides rhythmic breathing, Distance 5m swim
Crocodile PFD and Me deep water, Rhythmic breathing 10 consecutive times, surface support 10 sec, side glides and kick 1m, Distance 10m swim

Leadership Programs

Course start dates TBD if sufficient interest - please call 720-3047 to submit your name if you are interested in taking any of these leadership courses.


Bronze Star – is an official certification of the Lifesaving Society. Participants develop Water Smart confidence and lifesaving skills needed for Bronze Medallion.

Bronze Medallion – Opens the door to the world of aquatic leadership including lifeguarding. Pre-requisite: 13 years of age or Bronze Star.

Bronze Cross – Offers the training needed to become an assistant lifeguard. Pre-requisite Bronze Medallion.

National Lifeguard – The only nationally recognized lifeguard training program. Pre-requisite 16 years of age with successful completion of Bronze Cross.

Junior Guard Program
Ages 8-15 years. The Junior Guard Club is a fun and exciting program that will maintain and enhance participants' lifesaving skills. There is some swimming with the club, therefore the participants must be able to swim two consecutive lengths of the pool. Materials and skills are taken from different lifesaving awards and lifesaving as a sport. Participants will be given an opportunity to interact with staff and develop solid leadership skills. Participants will be helping with activities in the community as part of their program. participants will be given passport books to log their progress. This program is offered in 10-week sessions.

Canadian Swim Patrol Program
Rookie Patrol / Ranger Patrol / Star Patrol Ages 8-12 years. It is possible for a patroller to be working on their Rookie time swim and their Star First Aid awards at the same time. Patrollers work on their skills at their own pace. After completing these courses the patrollers are better prepared for difficult lifeguard courses to follow.

Monday 19 March 2012 at 0600hrs online registration will commence.

Registration is on a first come first serve basis. Payment option include cash, debit, Mastercard or Visa.
The Spring session will run for 8 weeks beginning April 14, 2012.

Shearwater Registration

PHONE-IN /WALK IN Monday 26 March 2012 0900-1500hrs - phone in and walk in registration begins - (walk-ins can only be done at Shearwater Gym).
Please note this service is offered only on weekdays.

Classes for Saturday will be held: 14 April - 09 June excluding 02 June 2012.
Classes for Sunday will be held: 15 April - 10 June 2012. Excluding 03 June 2012
Classes for Wednesday will be held: 18 April - 06 June 2012.
