The 2011 fitness challenge, organized and presented by Personnel Support Programs (PSP) Halifax, is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 16 at MacDonald Beach.
To acknowledge the legacy of PO2 Craig Blake, the first Canadian Navy sailor to fall in Afghanistan, the annual Navy Fitness Challenge has been renamed the Craig Blake Memorial Fitness Challenge.
PO2 Blake, a 37-year-old clearance diver with FDU(A), died on May 3, 2010 after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated during a dismounted operation about 25km southwest of Kandahar City in the Panjwayi District.
PO2 Blake joined the Navy in his late teens and had been in the FDU(A) since 2000. In September 2008, then MS Craig Blake participated in the Navy Fitness Challenge as the cyclist member of a triathlon team competing in the open category and his team, named Waterwings, won their category.
It is with great honour and pride that PSP Halifax announce the inaugural Craig Blake Memorial Fitness Challenge. PO2 Blake's passion for fitness emulated everything our PSP Fitness and Sports organization continues to convey to every member of CFB Halifax.
This competition is open to all military and DND personnel from Formation Halifax and military teams from bases within the Atlantic region. Teams must be comprised of three members. Both teams and individual competitors may compete in either the masters or open categories. The event consists of three legs including a 300-meter swim, a 6.5km cycle and 2 km run. The Navy Fitness Challenge has grown dramatically since its inception and is the survival of the fittest. For additional information, please contact Jason Price
