PHYSICAL EXERCISE SPECIALIST

Melissa J.C. Crawford BA, MSc., CSEP-CEP

The primary role of the Physical Exercise Specialist is to bridge the gap between the medical and fitness fields with respect to CF members with physical and/or mental barriers.  Physicians, physiotherapists and other health care professionals provide guidance to the Physical Exercise Specialist in order to assist CF Members in their reconditioning programs.  The reconditioning program is an important step in ensuring a smooth transition from a rehabilitation program back to baseline or beyond.

REMEDIAL PT
Military Members are expected to possess a certain level of fitness in order to fulfill their duties and be deemed "deployable".  Remedial PT provides CF Members with individualized programs specific to the CF-EXPRES test.  Remedial PT is supervised by the Physical Exercise Specialist and the programs are designed for each CF Member and their individual needs.

PERSONALIZED RECONDITIONING
PROGRAMS
Post rehabilitation, it is essential that a proper progression is followed in order to continue improving fitness levels while minimizing the risks of re-injury.  The personalized reconditioning program will target areas of a member's level of fitness that require improvement, while working within their limitations and/or restrictions.  An assessment with the CF member is conducted and a personalized program is developed in consult with their health care professional.  Regular follow up appointments are scheduled to record all progressions and improvements.  CF Members must obtain clearance from the CDU and/or approved health care professional prior to receiving their program.
