Garrison Petawawa is the first CFB to become recognized as a Youth Friendly Community. This designation is given to communities within Ontario from PLAYWORKS, an independent group of organizations committed to helping youth by encouraging and promoting a greater investment in youth play.
The Youth Friendly reception was held at Queens Park on 27 Oct 09. The Youth Friendly Community Recognition Program celebrates communities that are taking steps to open their doors to youth. The rigorous selection process required communities to meet at least 10 of the 16 criteria including providing opportunities for play, youth engagement, accessible programs and opportunities for youth activism. Since 2005, 32 Ontario Communities have been recognized as Youth Friendly. New in 2008, communities worked toward different levels of recognition, bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. Many communities have applied successively in order to reach platinum status.
